I have 8 numbers here in addition to the BT line and there's only the BT rental to pay (oh and the £4/month for the Gradwell number) so all in all quite a bit saved. Ivor |

Before you suggest that it was my own fault it took so long, I should add that pretty much everyone else around here in those days took equally long to learn the black art. >Since then, what configuring is there to do? None apart from if you change your providers or buy new equipment. Because of the hassle configuring it first time, I tend to stick with the providers I have as I can't be arsed to go through the configuration pain again. On the other hand if a new provider supplies me an out-of-the-box solution I' might be more inclined to try their service. VoIP is not unlike the situation we had 15 or so years ago with networking computers together. You had to go on a week's course to learn about networking and then back at the office you juggled lots of wires and parameters around to get the stuff working. Nowadays you just buy a PC, plug in the ethernet cable and it all works out of the box. When VoIP becomes mature, the suppliers of this equipment and services will hopefully realise that it is ridiculous to offer users equipment with so many parameters that needs panels of experts on uk.telecom.voip and elsewhere to guide beginners through the maze Users will want stuff that works right away without all this set-up hassle or having to wade through uk.telecom.voip or other forums. |

If usage is high enough there are significant savings to be had. Just by implementing VOIP in the shop I have been able to give our card terminal it's own dedicated line (telewest) instead of sharing it with a phone by adding 2 additional VOIP lines at no extra cost other than the router which needed upgrading any way. Call savings I have yet to verify, but as an example I was using talktalk on their talk3 tarif which, as a significant amount of our calls were to mobiles, there will be enough of a saving each month to cover the line rental of the BT line. Also not forking out for the £10 or whatever for the Talk3 (unlimited national calls) will cover the rental of the Telewest phone line. Currently all calls still come in on BT so no problems with calls dropping out. Admittedly, your average single line user wouldn't significantly benefit, but anyone with teenagers in the house could benefit hugely by having an extra line or 2 with cheap calls. I am a convert already and it's only been 2 days. -- http://gymratz.co.uk - Best Gym Equipment & Bodybuilding Supplements UK. I have a line from voipfone and one from Vonage which cost me ten pounds a month I could manage without the voipfone account but the call back mobile service saves me pounds in mobile calls during weekdays . |

Unless you do not have access to a browser, of course. 'callback' is an alternative spelling to use. Brian. |
