Ron, you are always saying things worth having are worth paying for. My computers, the data on them and my phone service are worth having. The words pot, kettle and black spring to mind. Anyway, anyone with any sense will have a UPS on their computer, what will you do when the mains fails half way through saving an important file and the resultant sudden stop corrupts your hard drive..? That happened to me ONCE many years ago on a DOS machine, it took me three days to rebuild the file structure and recover what I could of the missing files. Never again. Get a UPS, you know it makes sense. Ivor |

If you backup your important files regularly to an external hard drive you will not loose much if your computer hard drive fails which also happened to me. I can live once in quite a few years with retyping one or two documents I have just done and lost. divoch |

I will tell you this, though. Sooner or later, if you don't take all the steps you can to safeguard your systems, you *will* regret it. A UPS is belt and braces, but sometimes one of the two will fail and your trousers will fall down..! I lost half the system files of a very important program that was involved in networking together several other machines across the country. Data flow on the link was out for three days. As I said, never again. Your risk, your decision, but don't blame me if you make the wrong one. Ivor |

However, I would guess, that out of those people who are interested in and would benefit from VOIP very few would actually need to go that far before considering VOIP. In my case, for example, all the data is regularly backed up and all the programs I have either on CDs or can be downloaded again. It is pain when the hard drive fails but it is "only" my time to get it all back together. As I am retired now I can afford to "waist" few hours to do just that. divoch |

I do not wish to take the risk. With a UPS, any mains failure won't affect the system at all, in fact it will do an orderly controlled shutdown until power returns. > > Anyway, anyone with any sense will have a UPS on their > > computer, what will you do when the mains fails half > > way through saving an important file and the resultant > > sudden stop corrupts your hard drive..? > Absolutely nothing Ivor plus over the last twenty years > at least we have never had a unscheduled mains failure, > had the power cut a few times but have always known the > time and date well in advance of such an happening . Oh good. So you're telepathic as well, now..? The power failure to which I refer was caused by a freight aircraft crashing into power lines and taking out a large portion of the local grid. The pilots and three crew died, by the way, in case you were wondering. Ivor |
