I take your point re the router but some ATAs are designed to
interface between the modem and the computer.
As far as STUN servers are concerned you don't have to use the one
belonging to the VSP you are using.
It would be interesting to know how SIP voip fares in a University
system. If anyone reading this has tried an ATA/SIP phone in such an
environment please post your comments.

It certainly doesn't work at my workplace. Everything is locked down and
routed via proxy servers belonging to the company, you can't even access
email from a different machine than your own, and as for web access,
forget it unless you're senior management..!

Thanks Gordon just popped down and bought a couple - they work fine :)

Daughter is in halls of residence , I already have an ata at home - but
obviously not really suitable for a uni connection

Default University halls

Hi,

I'm just wondering whether anyone has been able to use an ATA in
University halls of residence which have only an ethernet/resnet cable
for each student.
My daughter has just started at University and I've bought her a USB
phone that she can use with Skype mainly because it's easy for her to
use and set up. Would be interested to hear how other people have
worked this out. Thanks, Hana
