Default Possible to route outbound calls from Asterisk IP PBX through Mitel 3300?

Hi,

Given the scenario where there is a Mitel 3300 IP PBX connected to an ISDN30
line, would it be possible (doable) to connect an Asterisk IP PBX to the
Mitel via a SIP trunk, and have the Asterisk box use spare channels on the
ISDN line?

In other words, would it be possible using the above setup to have 1 or more
phone numbers on the ISDN30 line be presented to the Asterisk box as though
they were like Zap trunks?

I guess one way of describing it would be using the Mitel as a proxy PBX?

Thanks for any ideas / suggestions.

I have no experience on Mitel 3300, but I think it is possible.

there is an article about connection between Mitel 3300 and Asterisk.

Easier might be to use Asterisk as a proxy PBX.

Buy a 2 port PRI card. Connect Asterisk to BT, and Mitel to Asterisk.

Requires some careful setting up, but I know people who do this.

Just throwaay the Mitel.... :)

What you'll save in the 'maintenance' fees from the legacy company that
supplied it will pay for the tasterisk box in no-time!

If he's lucky, they'll be dual mode SIP/MiNet handsets that will work
with Asterisk.

The throw away option may actually be the better option here if I can
persuade the owner. At the moment the system runs on MiNet so Mitel's palms
are greased everytime a new extension or mailbox comes online - as the PBX
is in a 'growing' environment it would be great to have the flexibility of
Asterisk throughout.

....and the existing handsets are SIP capable Mitel units :-)

Well, if you want an off-the shelf unit rather than rolling your own,
drop me an email :)

Has anybody used these?

I did some tests a few years ago and they were fairly terrible.

Lots of things caused the phones to reboot. Call on hold, off hold, on
hold again was the classic crash.

I haven't tested recently, and so i was interested to know of anybody
else has.

I've been looking at the possibility of using Mitel 5212's in SIP mode and
it's probably going to be quicker and easier to invent a quantum telepathy
system.

So far it has involved having to setup a whole raft of new DHCP scope
options, setting up a TFTP server, upgrading the Mitel firmware two major
revisions, and still not being able to work out how on earth to set the SIP
Proxy address (apart from using an arcane CFG file that's accessed via TFTP
when the phone boots).

The web interface of the phones just flat refuses to work (I wonder if it
has been knobbled by BT somehow, as they supplied the phones)?

What firmware are they on? Are you sure it's in SIP mode? I had no
problem configuring a 5212 to work with Asterisk on my LAN. I used the
web interface with Firefox, and didn't set any DHCP options other than
the standard gateway and DNS settings. The instructions at voip-info.org
were helpful when I set up 5220's a couple of years ago. As for the CFG
file, if I had any quantity of these phones > 1 I'd always go with TFTP
for configuring them.

Unlikely. Have you tried factorying it?
