Hi All,
I've just started using my SPA3102, and wasn't impressed with both the sound quality of an incoming PSTN call - I don't know if the person on the other side was using a poor cordless phone (?) - and an outgoing call to a mobile in a diferent country - not the easiest scnearios, I know... Still, I've changed "Jitter buffer adjustment" from "up and down" to "up only" - trying to increase the buffer so the sound doesn't have cuts in the middle, like I noticed today :-( Does this seem like a reasonable option? Besides, I'm considering fidling with codecs... Apparently G726 should allow for fair quality, with smaller packets of data. Right, or not so much?? I'm trying G726-32 Any other codec sugestions, and why you'd choose them? (I'm presently using G711a) Oh, since the SPA3102 is attached to a router port, I've already setup in the router high priority to that port over the others - wich have normal priority. Regards, Jose |

Bandwidth is ~85k each way with overheads - quality is the best you'll get and equicalent to ISDN. G726-32 is DECT quality in half the bandwidth of G711a. G711u is comparable to G711a but the North American standard. Anything other codec you will probably notice the compression to some degree. Regards Peter |

I've noticed the diference in sound fidelity, already, after switching from G711u to G726-32, but the sound continuity is fautless, and fidelity is very much acceptable! I understand not all Voip providers are equal when it comes to call sound quality, and I notice that particularly when calling mobiles "abroad", and even landlines in "far" destinations like Japan, sound continuity, in particular, is very easily discernable in such cases, between my 2 Voip providers: VoipCheap and VoipFone ;-P I'm in Portugal, I could go into detail, but summing up, I've given up calling mobiles in the UK using VoipCheap ;-) >Anything other codec you will probably notice the compression to some >degree. I'm willing to lose fidelity, for the sake of continuity and synchronism, although other than Voip calls to landlines in Japan through Voipcheap, I only have complaints about some calls to mobiles - but there, the mobile network probably plays probably the most important role :-S Best, Jose |

I wonder if their business model revolves around hooking people up with cheap good prices then after a certain period of time sliding the prices up whereby the majority of people won't bother to shop around, then they start up a whole new business with attractive rates, perhaps keeping below a certain tax threshold? Don't see why anyone should want to be anti Betamax companies, I've had brilliant service from them and unbeatable call savings to mobiles. -- http://gymratz.co.uk - Fitness & Gym Equipment/nutrition specialists. Although were a certain of their servers is, and you are, meaning, how far apart, might make a diference, among their offerings - making pings to diferent of their servers does return diferent values. >Don't see why anyone should want to be anti Betamax companies, I've had >brilliant service from them and unbeatable call savings to mobiles. 1) I suppose what you understand by "service" - I certainly never had any of my e-mails replied when I first sarted using one of their brands, and never heard of anyone who has; And if you want a little more service than just cheap calls, you definitelly need to look somewhere. 2) Cheap they are indeed, but when it comes to less "common", or more "distant" destinations - such as Japan - I'm not happy with their calls, while other Voip provider I use - VoipFone - deliver perfect call quality (even to Japan that is)! How they can sell so cheap, offer so much of free calls, and if they do it legally and fairly, I really don't have a clue. There's room for Betamax, and for a lot more sophisticated (and less cheap) offers, I guess. Regards, Jose |
