Trixboxers beware! Uncle Ward over at nerdvittles.com has posted an
interesting article concerning a previously undisclosed bot that is hidden away in Trixbox. Basically, it does an "ET" and phones home every morning at 3.41am. Article here: http://nerdvittles.com/index.php?p=198 Makes me glad I moved away from Trixbox to PBX-in-a-Flash. |

Granted it won't have the pretty GUI that trixbox added. |

I've been a fan of Nerdvittles for a while - they have helped a lot of budding Asterisk@homers and Trixboxers for some time now with a lot of cool extras. Moving off Trixbox was something I'd been thinking of for a while for a few reasons. Without going into great detail, the Fonality buyout (or is it buyin?) of A@home seemed to herald a change of direction in the project. I had also been looking at Elastix (which supposedly has reliable faxability) and CentPBX as a replacement. > btw the bot is a feature, what i understand, and i guess is easy to > remove/switch off, what's the hassle :) ? True. Yes, it *can* be switched off, and it was only sending back "unidentifiable user stats" to HQ, but the point that I wouldn't feel comfortable with is that they weren't exactly upfront about it. I think it may have been better to make it a user option to send info as part of the installation process or even include it as part of the Terms and Conditions. But then again, how many of us really read those before just clicking the accept button? Anyway, that's my 2ps worth. |

I had no joy on Debian or Mandrake. WIth Trixbox, ISTR it was pretty straightforward. -- Locate your Mobile phone: <http://www.bizorg.co.uk/news.html> Great gifts: <http://www.ThisBritain.com/ASOS_popup.html> |

Using the mISDN drivers they "just work"... My pbx-inna-box uses a Debian variant (booting from flash) and works just fine with HFC cards... So if you take the time to compile up your own asterisk & modules, etc. then it might be worth it for you. >WIth Trixbox, ISTR it was pretty straightforward. Maybe you need the GUI front-end independant of the underlying asterisk, etc. so just install FreePBX after asterisk? Gordon |

Most of the stuff I'm doing overrides the Trixbox stuff anyway. But it's working fine as the office PBX and seems to cope with the Dialplan and PHPAGI apps I've been writing. So, for time being at leaast "if it ain't broke..." -- Locate your Mobile phone: <http://www.bizorg.co.uk/news.html> Great gifts: <http://www.ThisBritain.com/ASOS_popup.html> |

( i want to be able to receive normal landline calls too) for phoning mostly by VoIP/SIP ? -- The Fug. |

The name PBX-in-a-flash could have a couple of meanings - 1) PBX in a flash (usb memory stick drive or flash card maybe) or 2) as in the expression "in a flash" meaning in an instant, rather than performing quickly - i.e. quick to setup. As a side note I had tried a virtual Trixbox running on a Compact Flash card on a Windows machine which worked, but not too well under a load of 2 or more calls at once...... If you don't want to get your hands too dirty, any of the distributions with a GUI like FreePBX (trixbox, PBX-in-a-flash, elastix, centPBX etc) makes setting up a working PBX very simple for untechy people like myself. Even for techy people they can save a lot of time getting things to work. Of course, as Gordon suggests abovr, you could install FreePBX after installing asterisk. The choice between a SPA3102 and a Digum card is down to you. The Spa3012 is cheaper and does the job well. It's also probably easier to set up to work reliably (some may disagree). |

I only thought the Asterisk software was more dedicated to the Digium card, instead of the SPA3102, but i guess the SPA is also very populair, lucky me..:) -- The Fug. |
