Default voip newbie seeks help

Hello
I am a viginmedia customer with a 20MB cable internet connection on the 12
month discounted deal. I also have a BT line. My BT bills are usually
20 -30 pounds per month for between 5-10 of calls. I am not a big telephone
user and it bugs me to pay my BT bill being such a low user. I am looking
into voip as I want to ditch BT in order to justify keeping my 20MB when the
discount expires.
Having read through the posts here, I believe I need a VOIP ATA and an
account with someone like cheapvoip.co.uk

Looking on ebay, there is quite a choice - Linksys, Cisco etc.

Could someone here recomend one that works well with virginmedia please?
I would also welcome any general help / advice on this issue.

Cheers folks,

Christine.

If you want to be able to use a cordless phone, the Linksys PAP2 is
likely to be the best to go for.

If you're not to fussy about using a cordless phone, then a Snom IP
phone would be my recommendation.

cheapvoip.co.uk are not a VoIP supplier as far as i can see! and, do you
want cheap, or good value?

after the 12 months with virgin at the discounted rate, cancel and get
the service again.... or blag a new offer from them....

I have Virgin (actually ntlworld) at 4Mb and use voip without problem.

On this group the consistent best voip supplier is www.voip.vo.uk You
will need to load a tenner to open the account but after that 1p/min
in UK, 2p/min anywhere in Europe. You get voicemail f.o.c.

I also have a Sipgate account - which has the advantage of giving you
a number at registration which will permit incoming calls without
credit on the account. You can also make calls to other Sipgate
users - which are free.

I started with a Sipura SPA2000 ATA and am very pleased with it. You
will however need a router to use this on your cable feed (Ethernet.)
If you don't have a router then get a SPA2102 as this sits between
your cable and your PC and has its own DHCP server (i.e. router) built
in.

The Linksys PAP2 is also a good buy.

For info Sipura were bought a while ago by Linksys: Linksys were in
turn bought by Cisco.

Ultimately the choice comes down to facilites and price, but any of
these three will do the job a treat. You will also need to buy a
telephone socket adapter as the box uses RJ11 - Maplin do them for
about 3.99

If you want help setting it up (no - it doesn't work straight out of
the box) drop me a mail off group - it took me weeks to get mine to
work, until I (accidently) found the problem.

Linksys pap 2 which are about to be re badged Cisco I believe .

Just keep well away from Sipgate at all cost www.orbtalk.co.uk seem to
provide a good service had an account with them for about six months
without any down time . Free UK geographical number no set up charge
only need a fiver in your account to make calls or their "Orbtalk 1000
- the International inclusive minutes bundle to all UK destinations
PLUS Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore and the
USA."at 4.99 plus vat .
I only use them for free 0800 and 0808 calls which you get without
having to put money in your account has I use my voip.co.uk account
for all uk calls evenings and weekends and voipcheap.com for all
international calls and daytime UK calls.

Or sign up to their excellent 19.99 yearly deal which gives hour long
daytime calls for 2p and free evening and weekend calls plus of course
excellent free telephone support.

Ignore this bloke, Chris, he's a notorious nutter.

Sipgate is fine.

Not only that, there is no cost necessarily associated with Sipgate.

That's certainly true if you just use Sipgate foe incoming calls,
and you get free voicemail and a free real telephone number,
any STD code you fancy.

Is that all you think about "COST" what happened to buy BRITISH
and loyalty to the British workforce, you may not have to pay THEM
anything to sign up and get a number but if you want to make a call
you have to pay unless you are all phoning each other and no one that
isn't a Sipgate subscriber .

You don't have to use the same provider for i/c and o/g calls, and
the way I look at it I pay 6.5ppm to call UK mobiles and get
UK geographic numbers free. See my earlier post in this thread.
Perhaps when I win the lottery, I will be able to afford to be as
patriotic as you Ron.
