Default Clarification on T.38 fax operation

Hi Folks,

Would someone enlighten me:

I am not having much luck with a Brother laser/fax machine hooked up to
a Draytek 2600VG router.

I am with voip.co.uk, who claim full T.38 compatibility.

I have ticked the T.38 fax option on the Router and although I can see a
dial request winging its way to voip.co.uk not much else happens,
inbound or outbound.

My main question is about CODECs - do you have to set the router to a
suitable (G711) one or is CODEC choice irrelevant for T.38 operation?

For what it's worth, I have tried with the router set to G711 and G.729

Any insight appreciated.

Thanks.

Codec choice is irrelevant for T.38 operation.

Are you trying to get the voice ports on the draytek to do T.38? I'd be
surprised if they do support it. T.38 is complicated to do properly.

The problem with T.38, is that not many devices support it. There isn't
the same degree of interop testing done as for voice.

It would be interesting to as voip.co.uk what devices they have tested with.

I don't have a clue, but have looked at the T.38 boxes on mt 2910VG and
wondered whether it menas the voip port can only be used as fax or
wheterh it knows wheter to use T.38 only when there is a fax machine on
the oter end.

You can set up a free account with voipfone.co.uk and they give you a
fax to e-mail number with your account. Admittedly it is an 0870 number,
but for the purpose of testing, a few quid would not be a hardship.

In actual fact........ If you use your new voipfone account to dial
your voipfone fax number, by all rights it should be a free call anyway
as all inter-voipfone calls are F.O.C.

Let me know
:¬)

Cheers
