So, I have got myself a Linksys pap2 and it is great. Except that the modem that came with my broadband is not compatible. It is 'phone in and USB out.
So, I need to exchange this for a router, or add one in line that can accept a USB in. My broadband is ADSL, Tiscali actually. I only want to use basic VOIP, not create a network, so I only need something basic and wired would be fine. Can anyone suggest something basic (cheap I guess) that would either replace the Speedtouch 330 or go in parallel with it. thanks. Laurieston |

Just grab yourself a router with a built in ADSL modem!
Make sure you get one with QOS though as this will allow you to set your voip priority over other web based traffic! I would recommend the BT Voyager 240 Wired ADSL Router myself as it has everything you need and it comes with QOS. Everyone will have their own recomendations though! I have one brand new in a box if your interested! I have cable broadband so never needed to open or use it! Will be putting it on ebay! ![]()

You need (like the last poster says) an adsl modem router,as your pc will need a network (lan) connection,as like the PAP2 will. There are no adsl modems as far as I'm aware with just 2 lan sockets on for what you need,3 maybe, but not 2.
Look at some of the bargains staples or pc world are offering as old stock. A complete setup can cost just £49 for wireless with a card and router in one box,if you want to go down that road. You cannot have a 'passthrough' lan connection if thats what you were looking for,it just doesn't exist! Maybe you would of been better off getting a usb ata if your pc is online all the time. The most common sold items are usually cheaper thru demand,so you might have to diverse and buy a box with extra unwanted functions for less money than a box that does exactly what you want it to. I needed just an access point last year,it was £30 dearer at the time than a modem,firewall,router,4port switch than just the access point made by the same people!! |

I'm currently having success with a safecom router with built in QoS and wireless and adsl modem, cost around £45.
Replaced my old belkin with it as it didn't take too well to voip (kept closing ports as it thought the voip was a DoS attack, this dosconnected calls. No such problems with the safecom (and no I have nothing to do with safecom ;) |
