Default Sad techie here!

Hi,

Been playing with VoIP for a couple of years now... I believe it is the future, but it's not ready for everyone yet (even Vonage has some problems).

Reliability, fallback to BT on power failure or internet connection loss, PSTN passthrough and sophisticated dial plans are a must.

Have spent loads of money on some very dodgy hardware - haven't yet found the perfect solution, but I hope to soon.

The VoIP providers seem to be far ahead of the hardware.

So - come on hardware manufacturers - there's a fortune for the perfect ATA or router to be had out there.

Hi David,

Welcome to the site, sounds like your the exact kind of person I was hoping to attract when I started this place. My apologies for the late reply, been very busy with work!

As do I (My reason for starting this site), and as do hundreds and thousands of telecoms companies around the world. Your right in saying VoIP isn't ready for your average technophobe just yet, but the area is developing faster than i have known anything before. Wont be long before old telephony is dead. BT are due to complete their 21cn IP network by 2012 i think...

Very wise words.

I'm currently using the Draytek Vigor 2800VG router... great piece of kit. Very technical so not so good for the average bod, but great if your a geek.

Cheers

Matt

Default Draytek 2700V

The Draytek 2700V was one of the dodgy routers.

For some reason it would reboot sometimes on an incoming VoIP call, losing internet and VoIP connectivity for a couple of minutes. Not ideal.

I could 100% reproduce the error by calling out on one of the VoIP lines and back in through the other. Reboot every time.

Draytek technical support never did get to the bottom of it (i.e. whether it was a hardware fault or a design flaw). Draytek tech support has no VoIP equipment to try or phones to call out on.

So it has gone back for a refund under the Sale of Goods Act 1979.

Hmm...

I've never had any issues with reboots or anything like that, having said that you're not the first person that I've heard mention them.

Perhaps it was just an earlier firmware bug? I only use one of the voip ports (for wireless handsets), and ethernet snom 320's wired in.

I'll plug something in to the second port and see if i can reproduce it now.

What are you using at the moment then?

Default Fritz!Box

Hi Matt,

I use a Fritz!Box at the moment.

It has some issues with the DSL Modem (see my review on here) so I use in ATA mode.

The VoIP functionality is quite rich - the best I have found so far:
  • 2 FXS lines
  • 1 FXO or ISDN line
  • Ethernet or USB connection
  • 10 SIP accounts
  • each SIP account can ring both, either or neither phone.
  • Comprehensive dialling rules to switch dialling over any of the 10 SIPs or PSTN. (I set 0800, 999 and 100 over PSTN always)
  • Auto area code and IDD preprend
  • Call blocking
  • Night Service
  • PSTN passthrough on internet failure (you get a warning beep)
  • Call through (call your box from your mobile, say, and make calls over VoIP)
  • caller id, call waiting, 3 way calling, other line call pickup, plus loads of other stuff you get on a full PBX.
  • Even a baby monitoring service!
Not really in wide use here, but worth a look - just don't use it as a modem yet.

Have a look at it at DSL, ISDN, Bluetooth, WLAN, VoIP.
