Default Fritz!Box Fon - Buyer beware

The Fritz!Box Fon is an integrated VoIP ATA and DSL Modem.

I bought one of these and it didn't sync reliably with my ADSL line even though the box it replaced (a Billion) did without fail.

After spending 10 days trying to get it to sync, buying another to make sure the first one wasn't faulty, changing all the cables, filters, settings and having fallen out with almost everyone involved in the supply chain. My ISP, BT and I have come to the obvious but unwanted conclusion.

The DSL Modem does not work unless you have the most amazing line quality.

My ISP tested my line with the good Billion and the Fritz and estimated that it reduced the S/N by about 6db and increased the attenuation by 10-15db. If your line is in any way average, the Fritz will not work.

My ISP has suggested that the Fritz has a major fault.

However, you can configure the Fritz as an ATA and place it on your network behind your good ADSL modem.

As an ATA, the Fritz!Box cannot be faulted. The VoIP features are out of this world.
  1. 2 Phone Lines
  2. Pots failover and programmed selection (works with ISDN too)
  3. 10 SIP registrations
  4. Comprehensive dialling rules
  5. Speed dial
  6. Call diversion
  7. Call blocking
  8. 3 way calling
  9. Loads of features you normally find on a PBX
The only real thing missing from the VoIP part is power failure failover to POTS or ISDN. Apart from that the VoIP functions are pretty much spot on.

So... It's a real shame that they haven't got the DSL modem bit right.

Default new firmware helps

I just got a Fritz!box fon router today, and me too got really short connections at first, and sometimes won't connect at all for minutes on end. However, upgrading the firmware seems to have fixed it completely.

I was getting 10 minute connections at a time on firmware 06.03.xx but since upgrading to 06.04.20 over 2 hours ago, it hasn't disconnected once yet.

Hope this helps. Also 06.04.20 has more features than the 06.03.xx.

What i would like to see in future firmwares is the ability to schedule dial plans. At he moment, one dial plan covers 24/7. I would like to be able to use voip at peak times, then landline at weekends for example.

Default

I have a FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7140 Annex A, Firmware version 39.04.34

I also found that I had dropped calls but after upgrading both the quality and the reliability improved. Seeing your post made me check if I was running the most upto date software and it's moved up to 39.04.37 now within perhaps two months.

I guess by your firmware reference that you were using a different model. I don't think my phone line is very good quality either. Sorry to hear of your experience, but I hope that others won't dismiss Fritz!Box as a result.

What is interesting is that you found it worked better behind a router. You don't mention what model you used. I tried it with a Belkin and couldn't get it to work.

Default Still trying...

This post is so old now. I still like the Fritz Voip functionality, but haven't solved the DSL line drop problem on the modem.

I am just about to try a brand new firmware, that is supposed to have sorted out some of the BT DSLAM computability problems, in a 7140. I will let you know how I get on.
