Hi, I am looking to setup a viop setup in our new office. and need some help with what I will need.
I have a negear router with a 2mg broadband connection, and would like to run six phones within the office. Will 2 mg be enough for voip? Apart from buying the IP phones is there any other hardware that I would need? Do I connect the phones directly into the router? or can I connect them into a switch because my router only has 4 ports? Any help or suggestions would be great? I am also looking for a supplier here in the UK any suggestions would be great? I am new to voip so any information would be great. Cheers |

Dear Matt
Each VoIp connection needs a minimum of 40k, so if 6 x 40 = 240k, a 2 meg connection should be OK. Be careful though, because your broadband connection may be contended. At 5:1 contention, your connection could be running at 400k, not the full 2 meg. We usually recommend an uncontended service to get the best call quality for VoIP, but your current connection may be OK. Check that your VoIP phones work with SIP, unless you are planning to use a Skype type service. The phones can be plugged directly into your router. Alternatively you can get an Ethernet hub, Netgear maybe, which will increase the number of phones that you can run. I would recommend a power over Ethernet hub, as they are quite cool, and would cut down on the requirement for power cables for the phones, and would reduce office clutter. We, Tempura Communications, supply SIP connections, and VoIP handsets, Snom, Mitel, Siemens, Grandstream adapters (fully configured). Very reasonable prices. Hope this helps. If you need further help, please let me know. Regards Mike (Tempura VoIP) |
