Default VoiP Research and Future

Hi there

I'm a complet newbie in the topic of VoIP. Two days ago I received the job to prepare a presentation with the title "Research and Future of VoIP".

Therefore, I spent some hours researching the topic to get a feeling about how VoIP works and its pro and cons. I think generally there are the following open issues where research for proper solutions is focused:

* Encryption of the audio data (refering to this press release)
* VoIP spam
* VoIP sniffing
* VoIP phishing
* Improvments in QoS
* Emergency calls

One challenge for the future is to bring the different nets (GSM, UMTS, WLAN) together to offer the users a homogenous environment. There are already some solutions/products in this field but it has to become more convenient in usability. But there seem to be also some business restrictions...

What do you think about this topics? Anything to add?

I'd be very grateful if some experts of VoIP could help me what the actual challenges are and in which direction the future of VoIP points. Maybe someone has good links about some research projects at universities or research companies.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

So long,
Ruth

Hi Ruth,

I have something to add in regard to VoIP's challenge on Emergency calls.

Emergency 911 calls are another challenge for Voice over IP telephony, because unlike traditional telephone it's difficult to determine the exact location of an IP address with geographic certainty. Without knowing the exact location, it's also difficult to determine which call center should receive a Voice over IP originated 911 call (though most Voice over IP providers do have 911 call routing based on the address you used when you registered).

I hope it could help you somehow.

Hi Laura,

Thanks for your reply. Already thought that nobody's interessted in this topic...

The fact you mentioned about 911 emergency calls is exactly the aspects i've intended to say with the point "emergency calls" in my listing.

Or am I confusing with the terms "emergency call" and "911 emergency call"? In my understanding the two therms refer to the same things...

So long,
Ruth

Ruth,

I've only just spotted your message (been too caught up with developing the site recently), have you finished your work or are you still looking for advice?

Matt

Laura

I hope your VoIP presentation went well.

Are you able to share your findings?

Regards

Mike
