Default VoIP Codecs

Hi,

Yeah sure thing its more than possible.

Ultimately it depends on the codec your VoIP provider is using, or the one you have chosen to use.

The most common codec G7.11 takes up 64Kbps. If your going to end up with 1mb/s connectivity then you can do the maths.

If the average VoIP call requires 64 kb/s, then a 1mb/s Internet connection can support 16 simultaneous calls and nothing else. If half your 1mb/s connection was used for web surfing, email and download, and the other half for phone calls, then your connection can only support 8 phone calls.

Don't forget to take in to account that many people don't actually get the full broadband speed they think this should. So knock a bit of bandwidth off for that just in case. Also if you don't have a QoS router, your other network traffic may effect you VoIP calls. Technically you should get 16 calls at once, but if your using the same connection for data and have a QoS router, i'd say you should be getting 5 calls no problem.

Of course if you are prepared to loose a bit of call quality you can use a lower quality codec, like G.729 which only uses 8 Kbps. Its all depends on what your provider supports, and what your endpoint (handset or softphone) can support too.

Hope this helps.

Matt

Edit: Your Fritzbox will support most codecs. What provider are you using?
